Steam traps separate and remove accumulated water (condensate) from a steam supply system. They allow condensate to drain away while preventing steam from entering the condensate line.  This enables the condensate to be returned to the boiler for regeneration into steam while keeping the steam in the steam system where its energy can be utilized.  Some steam traps also vent air and other non-condensable gasses from the steam system.
