Benefit of Material to Systems Application
Carbon steel pipe is the most common material used for steam systems. Price comparisons to other materials are rarely necessary since other materials are rarely used. It is available in a wide range of sizes and lengths. Its high tensile strength and internal pressure ratings make it ideal for even the highest pressure steam systems. As the most common material used in the mechanical contracting industry, joining and installation techniques are well known by pipefitters.
System Application and Material Usage
Carbon steel’s combination of mechanical properties and characteristics continue to make it a first choice for steam applications. A key advantage to steel is its ability to be rolled, formed, bent or fabricated, allowing it to be manufactured into various sizes, shapes, and configurations. The elongation properties of steel allow it to withstand stresses and strains without bursting under shocks from surges, water hammer and other man-made disturbances. Longer lengths enable faster and more economical installations. Numerous flushing chemicals as well as other chemical treatments are available to ensure corrosion free service in steam systems.
Steel pipe is available in a variety of wall thicknesses. The system working pressure and pipe joining method will determine the required pipe wall thickness for each application. Steel pipe may be installed for steam systems using a variety of joining methods including grooved, welded, flanged, threaded and other mechanical joining methods.
