Benefit of Material to Systems Application
The use of carbon steel pipe on process piping systems is an accepted and widespread practice all over the world, providing useful service life on compatible chemical processes in environmentally controlled areas. It can be used in process piping systems and is accepted as a material for piping systems in all process piping codes. The high tensile strength and internal pressure rating of carbon steel pipe make it useful in these systems. Unless corrosion or contamination of process fluids is a concern, carbon steel is the best and most common choice for process piping.
System Application and Material Usage
Typical process piping systems range in size from 1/2" to 30" in diameter and handle a wide range of fluids from water to chemical services.
Steel is readily available in these sizes and in a variety of wall thicknesses, with "standard wall" or "heavy wall" being the most common for use in process piping systems. As "process" covers a broad spectrum of applications, corrosive and erosive factors must be evaluated to determine suitable corrosion and erosion allowances. Where high corrosion and erosion is expected, heavier wall pipes are often used to help extend useful life. The system working pressure and pipe joining method will also determine the required pipe wall thickness for each application.
Steel’s combination of mechanical properties and characteristics continue to make it an acceptable choice for process pipe systems. A key advantage to steel is its strength and ability to be bent or fabricated, allowing it to be manufactured into various sizes, shapes, and configurations. The elongation properties of steel allow it to withstand stresses and strains without breaking under shocks from surges, water hammer and other man-made disturbances.
Steel is a common material that plumbers and pipefitters are accustomed to working with. Common joining techniques include threading, welding, flanging and grooving. Longer lengths enable faster and more economical installations due to fewer joints.
