Material Galvanized Steel Pipe

Steel pipe that has been dipped into a molten zinc bath is commonly known as "Hot Dipped" Galvanized Steel pipe. The layer of zinc provides a protective boundary, permitting steel to be used in moderately corrosive services (domestic water, condenser water, "wet" compressed air) and locations (outdoors, damp/humid indoor). This pipe requires no special handling and is economically priced compared to other non-ferrous materials resulting in lower material costs. The hot dipped galvanizing process is controlled by standards so that a consistent product is available.

Pipes must be able to withstand the internal working pressure of the system without bursting.  Pipe is available in various wall thickness known as “weights” to accommodate various pressures: the thicker the wall, the higher the pressure rating of the pipe.  The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has developed a standard system that designates pipe weights using “schedule numbers” ranging from Schedule 10 (S.10) through Schedule 160 (S.160). Higher schedule numbers designate greater pipe wall thickness and correspond to higher allowable working pressure.  An older system is also sometimes used to designate pipe weight. In this system standard (STD) is equal to Schedule 40 and extra strong (XS), sometimes known as extra heavy (XH), is equal to Schedule 80. Pipe with walls twice as thick as extra strong is known as double extra strong (XXS) or double extra heavy (XXH).
